| Xiuying Gun Emplacement : Xiuying Gun Emplacement is situated in Xiuying Village, about 6 kilometers from Hai Xiu Road in the suburbs of Haikou. It is one of the four most famous gun emplacements in ancient China In 1890, the government of Qing Dynasty ordered that all the costal areas in China should be strictly defended in order to guard against the intrusion of the French army. Zhang Zhidong, the general governor of both Guangdong and Guangxi came to inspect the Kaikou in person and decided that the emplacement should be built. Then cannons were brought from German and the post was set up.
| read more>> | | | | Wugong Temples : The Wugong Temple was built during the reign of Emperor Wanli in Ming Dynasty (1368~1644), had been rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in Ch'ing Dynasty (1616~1911) and was renovated several times later. It was built in order to commemorate the five historic figures who were banished to Hainan Province in Tang Dynasty (618~907) and Song Dynasty (960~1279). The five celebrities were Tang Prime Minister Li Yude, Song Prime Minister Li Gang, Li Guang, Zhao Ding, and a famous official named Hu Quan. | read more>> | | | | Qiongtai Academy : The Qiongtai Academy was initially built in 1705 to commemorate Qiu Jun, the first bel-esprit of Hainan who was a Grand Academician of the Ming Dynasty. The academy was named Qiongtai because Qiu Jun was called "Mr. Qiongtai". At one time, the academy was the supreme institution of Qiongshan.
