Datong is one of China's best known historical and cultural cities as it once served as the capital city of Northern Wei Dynasty (386-557) and alternative capitals of the Liao and Jin Dynasties. As a boarder city it witnessed frequent cultural exchanges between Han and different ethnic groups. The ancient Great Wall also adds a stunning touch of the beautiful northern Chinese loess plateau landscape. Many historical sites and scenic spots make Datong one of the best tourist spots in China, which includes the 1,500 year old Yun Gang Grottoes of the Northern Wei Dynasty. There are now 53 grottoes and no less than 50,000 stone statues of varying size which are vivid and striking.
