Kunming offers many locally made products and the interaction between different cultures, religions and colorful lifestyles gives visitors so much to see and buy! It is an ideal place to find local products and souvenirs of your trip to Yunnan!
Kunming is famous for local handiwork including ivory and woodcarving, Dai Jin (brocade made by Dai artisans), and Dai Zhu Bian (Dai bamboo basketry).
Kunming ivory carvings are exquisite. Carved ivory birds, flowers, and images are valuable and popular as collectibles and precious souvenirs.
Note: As a rule, ivory and ivory articles are forbidden to be taken out of China. Items will be closely inspected upon departure and require approval to be removed from the country.
Famous Kunming wood carving can be found mainly in wood furniture including chairs, benches, and tea tables, some with marble inlay that is classical and elegant.
Most Dai women can weave Dai Jin, a kind of drapery with colorful and unique designs used to make bags, curtains, bedclothes, and cushions that make excellent gifts.
Dai people are also clever at making articles of bamboo. Dai families live in bamboo houses in which everything is made of bamboo including cabinets and hats.
Also available are excellent local products such as dried mushrooms, tropical fruits, and batik. For those less adventurous, shopping at a WalMart supermarket will remove some of the risk of buying "pirated" products, and prices are reasonable.
Nan Yao Market is the largest open air market selling primarily local specialties and handicrafts, and is ideally located next to the railway station and the long-distance bus station.
The four-story traditional Yunnan Curio Building located on Nanping Road houses old Yunnan artwork. The Jinma Biji Archway is itself an attraction in Jinbi Road. There many stores offer handicrafts made by various minorities. Both are ideal souvenir venues.
Tip: You can bargain with the storekeepers in the above markets.
The Kunming Department Store is conveniently located on Dongfeng West Road in the center of the city. You can buy all kinds of daily commodities there. Qian Cun Department Store on Renmin Middle Road is a new and modern store popular with tourists.
If you don't find an Internet bar to contact friends and relatives, you can still mail a card or a letter. The Yunnan General Post Office at 229 Beijing Road is the largest post office in Kunming. There you will find many different kinds of postcards as well as stamps.
Situated in Jing Xing Jie, the Bird and Flower Market is a glimpse into local life. The market has become a must-visit destination where you'll find pets, curios, artwork, and handicrafts for sale.
