Conveniently located between the Tin Hau area and Causeway Bay area, Victoria Park (named after the English queen) is one of the main city parks on Hong Kong Island and the venue for major events on special occasions. It includes several pools of water located in the garden area that are often used by the locals for remote-controlled boats.
The area was originally used as a shelter to protect fishing boats and yachts during typhoon seasons. In the 1950s, the shelter was relocated to the north and the park was built.
It is the largest and most famous park in Hong Kong, first opened to the public 40 years ago. It includes leisure facilities such as tennis and squash courts, a swimming pool, football fields, a handball court, basketball courts and bowling greens. The outdoor environment facilitates various events and demonstrations making it one of Hong Kong's key focal points.
Victoria Park boasts the biggest flower fair in Hong Kong, held just before the Chinese New Year. |
