Jiya village is located in the suburbs of Hotan city. This is a small country workshop to show you the process of the age -old manual silk making, including boiling the cocoons, reeling the strands, spinning the thread, tying and dying the design, and weaving the fabric.
Atlas is a Uighur word for the silk . According to the legend sericulture was introduced to Hotan by a Chinese princess about 1500 years ago. It's said she concealed the eggs of the silkworm and the seeds of the mulberry in her hair dress when she passed the Chinese custom as the Chinese strictly controlled the silk secret. Since then silk embroidery became a major industry in Hotan.
