The secong city of Qinghai province, Golmud is a sparse dusty town whos main attraction is as a jumping off place for Tibet. Route 109 runs the buses up onto the Tibetan Plateau & more recently the new rail link makes Golmud(or Geermu as its also known) the first major stop before Lhasa.
Once part of Tibetan Amdo, Qinghai now mainly owes its existance to mining & although there is a mixed population the largest ethnic group is now Han Chinese.
Golmud is a fairly easy town to navigate as its streets are laid out in a grid pattern. Any travel done beyong the city requires a Alien Travel Permit which can be gotten in minutes for 50Y at the PSB. Note that no tickets, train or bus, can be bought without a permit.
A few grubby hotels surround the train & bus station, but its worth your while to head upto Kunlun Lu street( one of two main streets in the centre) to pick up good, clean accommodation for little more than $2USD- your best option is the Golmud Hotel. Information is sparse & the town is not geared up for travellers with few people speaking English, so come prepared. A good phrase book would work miracles.
Golmud has few attractions so if you find your self stuck for a few days, buy a book. The only other past time is some cheap shopping which if your heading for Tibet might be your last opportunity. |
