The Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, praised as the Eighth Wonder of the World, will make its third excavation on 13 June.
The Terracotta Warriors and Horses were discovered by a farmer of Lintong in 1974. There are altogether three pits in the museum. The pit 1 is the largest of all. Totally about 1000 terracotta warriors and horses were excavated. However, the archeologists said there would be more than 60000 terracotta figures in pit 1. At present, on the basis of specific exploration, the researchers decided to make the third excavation to the pit 1 on 13 June.
It is said that the site of the excavation is at the north of the middle part of pit 1. The whole area will be about 200 square meters. Actually, the excavation work is the third time to the pit 1. During the period of 1978 to 1984, the first excavation had been made to the pit 1 and 1087 terracotta figures were discovered. The second excavation had been made in 1985. However, the excavation work paused a year later because lack of complete technical facilities.
'This year, we have got the certificate to excavate the national relics and we have the qualification to excavate the terracotta warriors and horses museum. We have the ability to protect the cultural relics. So we choose to make the third excavation in this year." said Xu Weihong, researcher of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum. This time, people are expected to the excavation. They want to know whether many mysteries could be discovered or not, such as if there are general figures in pit 1; besides the soldiers, if there are civil officers; with new technique, if former colorful terracotta figures could keep its colors. |
