Founded by Jamyang Choje, a disciple of Tsongkapa, in1416. It is the biggest monastery in Tibet, once harbored some ten thousand monks, though as a rule. It was to house 7,700 monks. Main relics:1)age of Maitreya(the Future Buddha), which is said to be so passionate and vivid that only seeing it would release one's sufferings;2)White Conch Shell, which is said to have been drug out from under the earth by Tsongkapa at its construction site;3) The funerary stupas of the 2 nd,3 rd, and 4 th Dalai Lama. |
