Samye is the first monastery built in Tibet .It was probably founded in the 770's under the patronage of King Trisung Detsan, with the work being directed by Pakmasambhava, the Indian master specially invited to supervise the construction of the monastery. The first seven monks of Tibet, known as the "Seven Examined Men", achieved their ordination and succeeded in keeping the vow of monkhood here.
Main relics:
1.the unique architectural structure of the monastery itself. It was designed on the plan of the Odantapuri temple in present-day Bihar, India;
2. The stone tablet erected by King trisung Detsan in 779 A.D, officially proclaiming, for the first time in Tibetan history, Buddhism to be the only official religion of Tibet;3)An old bell, probably of the same time. |
