Located in the center of Xi'an, it is a superb piece of Chinese ancient wooden architecture. Built in 1344 during Ming Dynasty, 36m in height, the supported by colorful dougong (a system of brackets in Chinese building). Dougong I a representative feature of Chinese ancient wooden architectures which can be found nowhere else in the world, A huge bell placed in the tower is used as a timer and an alarm in emergency situation. Less than 1km away from Bell Tower and 22m in height, the Drum Tower was built in 1380, the 13th year during the reign of Hongwu Emperor in Ming Dynasty. A huge drum is placed in the tower, which is used to beat time at dusk. Drum Tower and Bell Tower are considered to be sister towers, and the scene of ringing the bell and beating the drum is known as "the Morning Bell& the Dusk Drum" |
