Ancient World Wonder-the Great Wall at Mutianyu, Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, 76km northeast of Beijing, is linked to the Gu Bei Kou section on the east and the Badaling section on the west. It was used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs.
The Great Wall, symbolizing China's ancient civilization, is one of the world's most renowned projects. China's population at the time, were involved in the project which took more than ten years. When it was finished we call it "Wan Li Chang Cheng" which means "Ten Thousand-Li-Long Wall". Mutianyu Great Wall was first built in the mid-6th century, older than Badaling Great Wall and was renovated twice in 1404 & 1569. Historical records show that about 1 million people, one-fifth of the largest construction scale with best quality control and unique characteristics made it the best-preserving section among whole of the Great Wall. The watchtowers and over-towering pass densely scatter at this section as closer as only 50 meters. Both the outer and inner parapets are crenellated with merlots, so that shots could be fired at enemy on both sides-a feature very rare on other parts. Mutainyu Great Wall consists of 3 structure shapes of the watchtowers, also a rarely seen at the other section of the wall. Besides, this section is surrounding by woodland and streams, the forest-coverage is over 90 percent. Compared with other section of the walls, Mutainyu is with few visitors and we should take cable car up to the wall. President Bill Clinton and many deluxe tours choose to visit Mutianyu instead of the Great Wall at Badaling Section. |
